Description
Rider on the Storm is a branching hypertext fiction game I made in Twine as part of my IGME-529: Foundations of Interactive Narrative class. The player is tasked with delivering a secret object to a safehouse and must make crucial decisions in order to survive. Each decision made has either a narrative or gameplay consequence down the road that will determine if the player completes their objective.
Role
I was the sole designer and developer of this game. I developed this game using Twine as it allowed me to create a branching narrative in its simplest form. When writing the narrative I was inspired by apocalypse fiction and the fear of vulnerability. The monster that the protagonist comes into contact with feeds on his fear while the humans of the world allow theirs to control them. The branching paths within the narrative come as a result of a series of choices that the player must make. Gameplay elements such as stat and item management come in to play to make the major narrative beats more interesting. I wanted to make the player choose between picking moral choices that may put them in danger or immoral choices that would help guarantee their survival. I also developed a turn based encounter system within Twine for the end boss fight with the monster that has been stalking you throughout the game.
